Renault’s Exhaust-Blown Front Diffuser
January 31, 2011
The first images of Lotus Renault GP’s R31 have appeared on the internet, and there are no exhaust exits visible in shots showing the rear of the car.
I’m hearing that the R31 is running an innovative exhaust system. Rather than routing the exhausts to the rear, the exhaust exits the car ahead of the sidepods, blowing over an extended diffuser to generate additional downforce. If this is true, it would certainly explain the disappearance of the exhaust exits from the expected locations, and would be a new approach in Formula 1.
More to come.

Were there any front exhaust systems in F1 history ?
Not to my knowledge. It’s a jaw-dropping innovation if true (and I believe it is); the other teams will struggle to copy this, if it’s possible at all.
Is there any rule against second diffuser?

Wichard,
That isn’t the R31; it’s the R30 in a Lotus Renault livery. Compare the image you linked to this one: http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/renaultr31_2011.jpg
